Story by Kate T. Parker

I have played soccer my entire life, as a young girl just learning the game, to division one college competition and still now, at almost 44, I still play and love this game (at a much slower pace now, lol). I have learned so many lessons from the sport and see my new book, “Play Like A Girl” a sort of love letter to soccer. I think sport, and soccer in particular for me, is HUGE in teaching girls how to use their voice, be strong, be aggressive, how to not give up or quit when things don’t go your way or are tough. When shooting for this book, I heard about Soccer in the Streets and made it a point to try and capture some of the girls and women that play for them. This amazing organization’s goal is to level the playing field for all, affording access to the sport regardless of race, gender, religion, or socio-economic status. They strive to integrate their communities, intertwining efforts from corporations, education systems, government, non-profits, and community leaders to better the lives of children through soccer. The girls on the field were literally from all over the world, mostly refugees from war torn nations, all learning the sport, language and country together. I can’t think of a better use of this sport or girls who embody the statement “play like a girl” better.
